Liters to Gallons: what to know

Liters are the metric unit for fuel, drinks and tank capacities; gallons are the US customary unit for gasoline, milk and water. The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which NIST Handbook 44 gives as exactly 3.785411784 liters. To convert liters to US gallons, divide by 3.785411784, or multiply by about 0.264172.

Worked examples: a 50 L fuel tank holds 13.21 US gallons; a 200 L aquarium is 52.83 gallons; a 2 L soda bottle is 0.528 gallons, a little over half a gallon. A 1,000 L water tank (one cubic meter) is 264.17 US gallons.

The UK, Canada and some Caribbean countries historically used the imperial gallon, defined as exactly 4.54609 liters by the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985. It is about 20% larger than the US gallon, so the same 50 L is only 11.0 imperial gallons. Fuel economy figures in miles per gallon differ between the two for the same reason. This page uses US gallons; pick UK gallons in the full unit converter if your source is British.

Popular uses

  • Converting fuel tank and fill-up volumes
  • Sizing aquariums, ponds and water tanks
  • Comparing drink and milk container sizes
  • Converting paint and chemical quantities

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: divide liters by 4 and add a little (3.8 L per gallon).
  • Check whether a British source means imperial gallons.
  • A US quart is a quarter gallon, 0.946 L, close to a liter.
