mL to Fluid Ounces: what to know

Milliliters are the metric unit for drinks, medicine, cosmetics and baby bottles. In the United States the same amounts are labeled in fluid ounces. The US fluid ounce is 1/128 of the US gallon, which NIST Handbook 44 defines as exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L). That makes one US fluid ounce exactly 29.5735295625 mL, so fl oz = mL ÷ 29.5735295625.

Worked examples: a 250 mL glass is 8.454 US fl oz; a 750 mL wine bottle is 25.36 fl oz; a 1 L water bottle is 33.81 fl oz; a 60 mL baby bottle feed is 2.03 fl oz. US nutrition labels round a serving cup to 240 mL and a fluid ounce to 30 mL, so label values can differ slightly from the exact conversion.

The UK (imperial) fluid ounce is a different size: 1/160 of an imperial gallon, or exactly 28.4130625 mL. 500 mL is 16.91 US fl oz but 17.6 UK fl oz. This page uses US fluid ounces; the full unit converter offers both. Neither should be confused with the ounce of weight (28.35 g).

Popular uses

  • Reading bottle and can sizes in US fluid ounces
  • Converting baby formula and bottle feeds
  • Checking travel-size toiletries against liquid limits
  • Converting cocktail and coffee recipes

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: divide mL by 30.
  • Check whether a recipe is American or British before using fluid ounces.
  • For medicine, use the dosing device that comes with it rather than converting kitchen measures.
