Fluid Ounces to mL: what to know

Fluid ounces (fl oz) measure liquid volume on US drinks, recipes and cosmetics. Milliliters do the same job in the metric system. One US fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 mL: the US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters (NIST Handbook 44), and a fluid ounce is 1/128 of it. So mL = fl oz × 29.5735295625.

Worked examples: an 8 fl oz cup is 236.6 mL; a 12 fl oz can is 354.9 mL; a 20 fl oz bottle is 591.5 mL; a 1.5 fl oz shot is 44.4 mL. Food labels often show rounded values, since US labeling rules allow 30 mL per fluid ounce and 240 mL per cup on nutrition facts panels.

Older British and Commonwealth recipes use the imperial fluid ounce, which is exactly 28.4130625 mL, about 4% smaller than the US one. The full unit converter has UK fl oz, pints and gallons. If a US recipe lists a solid ingredient in ounces, it means weight, not volume; use the ounces to grams page for that.

Popular uses

  • Converting US drink and bottle sizes to milliliters
  • Translating American cocktail and baking recipes
  • Measuring with a metric jug or syringe
  • Comparing cosmetic and shampoo bottle sizes

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: multiply fluid ounces by 30.
  • 2 tablespoons make 1 US fl oz, and 8 fl oz make 1 US cup.
  • Solid ingredients in ounces are weights; convert them to grams instead.
