CM to Feet: what to know

Converting centimeters to feet usually means turning a height or a piece of furniture into the units used in the US and UK. A foot is exactly 30.48 cm, so feet = cm ÷ 30.48. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, this has been an exact definition rather than a measured ratio.

Heights are normally stated as feet and inches, not decimal feet. Divide by 30.48 to get feet, keep the whole number, then multiply the decimal part by 12 to get inches. Example: 165 cm ÷ 30.48 = 5.413 ft; 0.413 × 12 = 4.96, so 165 cm is about 5 feet 5 inches. Another: 183 cm is 6.004 ft, essentially 6 feet 0 inches. You can also divide by 2.54 to get total inches (183 cm = 72.05 in) and split that into feet.

The conversion also helps with room and furniture planning when a product lists metric sizes. A 200 cm sofa is 6.562 feet, or about 6 feet 6.7 inches, and a 90 cm counter height is 2.953 feet, just under 3 feet.
