Feet to Meters: what to know

Feet are the common unit for heights, room sizes, building plans and altitude in the United States, and for aviation altitude almost everywhere. Meters are the SI base unit of length. To convert feet to meters, multiply by 0.3048, the exact length of the international foot.

The international foot was defined in 1959 as exactly 0.3048 m (12 inches of 2.54 cm). Until the end of 2022 the US also used a survey foot of 1200/3937 m for land surveying; it differs by about 2 parts per million and has now been retired by NIST and NOAA. This converter uses the international foot.

Worked examples: a 9-foot ceiling is 9 × 0.3048 = 2.7432 m; a 12 × 15 foot room is 3.6576 × 4.572 m; and a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet is 10,668 m. For feet and inches, divide the inches by 12 and add them to the feet first, so 5 ft 9 in = 5.75 ft = 1.7526 m.

Popular uses

  • Converting room dimensions and ceiling heights for metric plans
  • Reading aircraft altitude or mountain heights in meters
  • Converting pool, boat and property measurements
  • Turning a height in feet into meters for forms abroad

Tips for the best result

  • For areas, use the square feet to square meters converter rather than converting each side twice.
  • A rough check: 10 feet is about 3 meters (3.048 exactly).
  • Keep feet and inches separate until you convert them into decimal feet.
