Feet to CM: what to know
Height is the most common reason to convert feet to centimeters. In the United States and the UK people usually state height in feet and inches, while medical forms, visas and most of the world use centimeters. One foot is exactly 30.48 cm (12 inches × 2.54 cm, as fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement), so cm = feet × 30.48.
For a height given as feet and inches, convert it all to inches and then multiply by 2.54. Example: 5 ft 7 in = 5 × 12 + 7 = 67 inches, and 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm. Another: 6 ft 2 in = 74 inches = 187.96 cm. If the height is written in decimal feet, such as 5.5 ft, simply multiply by 30.48: 167.64 cm.
The same conversion is useful for furniture, shelves and short lengths of fabric or timber. A 2-foot shelf is 60.96 cm and a 3-foot bench is 91.44 cm. Because the factor is exact, the result is exact; round it to the nearest centimeter or millimeter depending on how precise the original measurement was.
