Meters to Feet: what to know

Meters measure almost every length outside the United States, from a person's height to a building or a running track. To convert meters to feet, divide by 0.3048, because one foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. That makes 1 meter equal to 3.280839895 feet, usually rounded to 3.2808.

The definition dates to the 1959 international yard and pound agreement and is used by NIST. Because the foot is a fixed fraction of the meter, the conversion is exact in both directions; the long decimal only appears because 1/0.3048 does not terminate.

Some worked examples: a 100 m sprint is 328.08 feet; a 2.4 m ceiling is 7.874 feet, or 7 feet 10.5 inches; Mount Everest's surveyed height of 8,848.86 m is 29,031.7 feet. To express a result in feet and inches, take the whole feet and multiply the decimal part by 12. 1.83 m is 6.004 feet, which is 6 feet 0.05 inches, effectively 6 feet.
