KM to Miles: what to know

Kilometers are the road and running distance unit in most countries, while the United States and the UK use miles on road signs. To convert kilometers to miles, divide by 1.609344, the exact number of kilometers in an international mile. Equivalently, multiply by 0.621371.

The mile's length comes from the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: 1 mile is 1760 yards of 0.9144 m, which is exactly 1609.344 m. That is why the factor has six decimals but no rounding. Worked examples: 5 km is 3.107 miles, 42.195 km (a marathon) is 26.219 miles, and a 300 km drive is 186.4 miles.

Speed and fuel figures follow from the same factor. A route of 120 km at 100 km/h is 74.6 miles at 62.1 mph. For distances at sea or in the air, the nautical mile (1852 m) is used instead; it is a different unit, and the full unit converter lists it separately.

Popular uses

  • Converting race distances such as 5K, 10K and half marathons
  • Reading road signs and route distances when traveling
  • Logging runs and rides from a metric app in miles
  • Comparing car range and trip lengths

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: multiply by 0.6, or remember 8 km ≈ 5 miles.
  • The Fibonacci trick works roughly: 5 km ≈ 3 mi, 8 km ≈ 5 mi, 13 km ≈ 8 mi.
  • Use nautical miles, not statute miles, for sailing and flight planning.
