Miles to KM: what to know

The mile is the distance unit on road signs in the United States and the UK, and for running and cycling in those countries. Converting miles to kilometers is a multiplication by 1.609344. The international mile is defined as exactly 1609.344 m (5280 feet of 0.3048 m), from the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, so the factor is exact.

Examples: a 3-mile run is 4.828 km; 26.2 miles is 42.165 km (the official marathon is 42.195 km, or 26.219 miles); a 250-mile road trip is 402.3 km. Speed works the same way, since a mile per hour is 1.609344 km/h: a 65 mph limit is 104.6 km/h.

Be careful with the nautical mile, which is defined as exactly 1852 m and is used at sea and in aviation. One nautical mile is 1.15078 statute miles. The miles on this page are statute (land) miles; the full unit converter has nautical miles too.

Popular uses

  • Converting US or UK road distances for metric maps
  • Translating running mileage to kilometers
  • Planning trips with a rental car abroad
  • Comparing car range or e-bike range figures

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: miles × 1.6, or miles × 8 ÷ 5.
  • Keep three decimals when converting race distances; officials measure to the meter.
  • Fuel economy needs its own conversion: mpg is not a simple km factor.
  • Mile markers on US highways count miles, so exits are easy to estimate once you know the factor.
